Brace Yourself

I had a long roadtrip yesterday from Austin to Baton Rouge. No A.C. in the Hybrid right now, but one modern convenience I like to avail myself of in lieu of refrigerated air is a burned CD or two. This time I burned the two newest albums I was excited about getting last week: X&Y by Coldplay, and (I know I'm a little behind on this, but...) Cold Roses by Ryan Adams and the Cardinals.

Coldplay's good. I really am into it. The music snob in me didn't even want to like it, but I just do. Live with it.

However, Cold Roses didn't sit well with me at all. At first listen I honestly thought it was a little vanilla. Some are saying this is his best ever. Strong words. For my money, I think that Heartbreaker/Demolition/Gold would be one of the Top 10 albums in music history if you took the high points and left off the junk (like the whole second half of Gold).

I might kick myself for saying this later, but you know what they say about first impressions...

I disagree with your first impressions Paul, but how could I not be severly obsessed with a certain Mister Adams.

Anyway, give it some more time. I've always found that his music grows on me. Wrong first impressions aren't crippling, as long as they don't prevent you from second and third impressions.

Brent, what a surprise to see that those Asian Internets can reach into the blogosphere.

I'm actually, *ahem* starting to really like Cold Roses. Maybe even a lot.

Cold Roses is like Ben Wallace of the Detroit Pistons. He goes undrafted, comes into the league unnoticed, and by his hard work becomes an all star. Someday, if it works hard and hustles on defense, Cold Roses could make its mark as an all star in my album pantheon.

Spoken like a true advertiser, Matt.

Yeah, Cold Roses has come on strong, and I just don't have a sense of urgency to listen to X&Y right now.

Apparently they make quite the mean duplicate of X&Y here in Asia. Who knew? Guess they like their Britpop/rock almost as much as Mariah Carey and Westlife.

I've only listened to it once so far, it's... ok.

Miss you guys. I hear Dan is leaving us.
